Current

  • Drag performance and wrestling share several traits. A DIY culture emerging in fabulous outfits and make-up. Eccentric personas, dramatic storylines, flamboyance and bodily performance. They both embody a subversive, hyperbolic expression of gender, all in consensual agreement with the audience.

Where masculinity is norm, the hyper-masculine flies under the radar. No one uses wrestling as a populist weapon of choice. Yet the hyper-femininity of drag queens is used in populist rhetoric time and time again.

Within the context of a heated cultural debate, I engage in photography to explore and expose the queer borderlands between artistic performance and gender performativity; between the hyper-femininity of drag queens and the hyper-masculinity of wrestling athletes.

Past

  • The photographs in the (re)mind | (re)place suite facilitates playful exploration of time, space, perspective, scale, and light. The photographs unveil stories of emotion, affection, and insight. They carry tales of love, loss, and longing. They form fragmental memoirs of childhood and coming of age.

  • I received the award Master of Arts by following a program in photography. Pursuing a post-graduate degree has made possible a practice oscillating between photographic work and academic inquiry.

  • Using lighting and post-processing with connotations to glossy magazines I explore archetypal masculinities by emerging myself as both subject and object in the artistic process. Becoming with false eyelashes, makeup and costume performs gender and raises multiplicities. I wander in the borderland of theatrical performance and gender performativity.

  • Exploration and enactment researching agencies evolving through objects, body and environment. Asking questions about mobility, strength, balance and agility. Inquiring the phenomenon of movement and physics through still frame captures.

  • I have explored what happens in the conjunction between my own body and innate, natural and constructed structures. How does my body meet and reflect nature's verdure or elements? How are shapes, lines and geometry constructed when I balance, fall and gravitate towards metal, earth and wood?

About

I enjoy the iterative, rhizomatic process of artistic research where photography meets philosophy, queer theory and quantum physics. An ongoing exploration of self/other, nature/culture and subject/object. An attempt to use photographic practice both to inquire into the world and depict agencies and phenomena.

Paraphrasing Karen Barad; My Performative understanding of artistic practice does not come from standing at a distance.
